　　　　　　　　　　　Brief Introduction of CISC

　　Located in Chongqing Municipal city, Chongqing Iron and Steel (Group) Company Limited (herein after CISC) is an iron and steel complex with the history of more than 100 years. The former of CISC，the Hanyang Iron Plant，initiated from the Westernization Movement which started the national industry in Qing Dynasty, was founded in September 1890 by Zhang Zhidong, Governor of Hu-Guang Area. During the Anti-Japanese War, to prevent the national fundamental industry and to beat back the Japanese invader, in 1938 Chinese Government dismantled the main equipments in Hanyang Iron Plant, Daye Iron Mine and Shanghai Steel Plant, and transported them to Dadukou Chongqing, a rear area of the war and at the upper stream of Yangtze River，and form a new plant. The new plant was named the No 29 Arm-shop under the Kuomingtang Military Department. After liberation in 1949, the plant had been renamed successively as the 101 plant of Southwestern Industrial Department, Southwest Iron and Steel Company, Chongqing Iron and Steel Company, Chongqing Iron and Steel (Group) Company. In May 1995, the company was reformed into Chongqing Iron and Steel (Group) Company Limited.

　 In 1950, CISC produced the first heavy rail for new China, and provided rail for Chengdu-Chongqing railway, the first railroad built after 1949. In 1979, CISC became the first steel company in China to sell the over planned steel product, broke down the unified distribution system on steel product. CISC set up its own import and export corporation in 1988, and acquired the right to import and export metallurgical products. CISC was the first steel company that upgrading the iron and steel making system with self raising money. CISC constructed the first steel plate producing model line with controlled rolling and cooling, and is one of the main producers of steel plate in China.

　 　CISC has been developing along with the reform and open-up of China. In 1995, CISC was selected as one of the 100 experimental enterprises running modern enterprise system by the State, and as one of the 120 experimental group companies in 1997. Now, CISC is one of the 512 state-owned large enterprises with priority supporting by the State. In 1997, CISC set up its state-level technology center and its state-level research station for post-doctoral degree in 1999.

　 　In the 21st century, CISC has stepped into a new stage through series of upgrading and modification along with the rapid growing of Chinese economy and the iron and steel industry. By the end of the ‘10th five-year’, CISC obtained the integrating capacity of 3 million ton steel, with the producing system of ‘two plates (medium plate and sheet), two lines (high-speed coil line and high grade special steel line)’.

　 CISC practices the managing system of parent and subsidiary. Under the parent company, there are 21 whole owned subsidiaries and 5 holding companies, including the core company—the H-share company listed on HK stock market (named “Chongqing Steel”). The employee of CISC is over 27000, and the total assets reached RMB14.2bln. CISC is the first industrial enterprise whose annual sales income piercing into RMB10bln in Chongqing, and ranked the 228th of top 500 enterprises of China in 2005. The main products of CISC are in six categories, i.e., plate, tube, section, strip, coil and bar. Among the leading products, 20g boiler plate and 16MnR pressure plate won the title of National Golden Medal Product; Lead coated sheets, No.18 stoop channel for mining and No. 6.5 scrap steel for mining won the title of National Silver Medal Product; and the ship hull structural plate and the plate for boiler and pressure container won the title of Chinese Famous Brand Product. The shipbuilding plate has been certified by 9 shipping classification societies worldwide, including LR, GL, ABS, DNV, etc. CISC has received the certificate of ISO9001 Quality Control System and ISO14001 Environmental Control System.

　 Along with the development of the iron and steel sector, the non-steel industry in CISC has also developed comparatively. The “5 non-steel industries” in CISC, including deepen processing of steel products and machinery manufacturing, construction and real estate, electronics and IT, environmental engineering and mining, have become the new economic growth point. The income of non-steel industries comes up to about 25% of the total income of CISC. Among the non-steel industry, the ‘Sanfeng Environment Company Limited of CISC’ is already a domestic famous company in the design, engineering and operation of environmental protection.

　 In recent years, the civilization construction in CISC has acquired substantial results with the theme of harmonious CISC, and won many honors like ‘the National Civilized Unit’. CISC, a pride and proud place to all its staff, had been visited by—Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zeming, the core leaders of the three generations of CPC.

　In the ‘11th five years plan’ period, the people of CISC will insist the spirit of ‘Infinite “San Feng”, Constant Ascent’, and the image of ‘Fortitude as Steel, Act and Think in Same Way’, to run CISC to a magnificent stage. Firmly united, the CISC people will take the scientific development concept as the basis for the enterprise reform and developing, guided by the ‘Developing Policy for Iron and Steel Industry’, to intensify management, promote the innovative of technique, and adjust the structures of industries and products. CISC will insist on the developing road of new industrialization, focus on energy saving and consumption reducing, spread clean production, reduce the environmental burden, develop recyclable economy, form an enterprise with resource saving and environment friendly, and to promote the sustainable and healthy development of CISC. With the supporting of the CPC Committee and the Government of Chongqing Municipal City, combined the self advantages and peculiarity, CISC established the developing strategy of ‘Moving for Environmental Protection, Exploiting on Resource, Innovating Independently, Achieving Distillation and Prosperous’. CISC has decided to move the old plants, set up new producing zone, adjust the structure, and expand the scale.

　 Looking into the future, CISC, a new modern iron and steel complex with splendid prospect, will tower above the shore of Yangtze Rive. A new CISC, with its one hundred year long history accompanying the Chinese industrialization, will march to a brilliant future.
